Why Treat Varicose Veins with Compression Stockings?

compression stockings

Compression stockings are usually the first treatment option for varicose veins. They are an old remedy, but one that is relied upon to help with circulation, which is the first concern when a patient presents with varicose veins. These specially made stockings squeeze the legs on a constant basis, which helps the veins and can be soothing for the muscles. Many people who notice varicose veins forming will head to the pharmacy and simply purchase a pair themselves. It’s a well-known treatment method. We do recommend seeing a physician, especially if there is pain associated with your varicose veins. Compression stockings can be purchased with different compression levels and there are prescription compression stockings available that can even be covered by insurance. Your physician may also want to run some tests to make sure there are no other underlying issues, such as blood clots. Compression stockings are often an initial treatment option for varicose veins and they’re also routinely used after surgery to promote circulation.

When compression stockings are not enough

Compression stockings will not generally eliminate varicose veins and there’s little evidence that they can help to diminish their appearance. For many patients, the veins are not physically painful but may cause embarrassment because they are unsightly. There are also a number of reasons why varicose veins might appear. For instance, many women experience these during pregnancy but they diminish or go away entirely afterward without any treatment. For most adults who develop varicose veins, they will not go away with the use of compression stockings. This treatment will just improve circulation, may keep them from getting worse, and can reduce pain.

Other varicose vein treatment options

There are many well-respected treatment options for varicose veins. The option that your physician recommends will depend on the type of varicose veins you have and where they are located. They will also want to run tests to make sure that there are no other underlying issues. Here are some of the most common:
  • Duplex Ultrasound. This ultrasound gives your physician an image of the veins underneath your skin. This allows for a proper treatment plan to be developed.
  • Transdermal Laser Treatment. This treatment option uses laser energy to get rid of unsightly veins and is particularly effective with spider veins.
  • Phlebectomy. This treatment option is used on larger veins and ones close to the skin’s surface. This is an outpatient procedure that surgically removes the veins.
  • Sclerotherapy. This treatment is used with asymptomatic veins and webs of veins. An agent is injected which causes the vein to corrode and be absorbed back into the tissue.
  • VenaSeal. This treatment injects an adhesive which seals off the vein while protecting the nerves.
In most cases, it’s recommended that you wear compression stockings after having one of these procedures to promote healing.
