Do Pelvic Varicose Veins Cause Serious Problems?

As if pregnancy didn’t come with enough bodily changes, you may notice the development of varicose veins in and around your pelvic area as your baby grows and develops in your belly. While enlarged veins in the abdominal area are common during pregnancy, if these veins turn to varicose veins and are accompanied by chronic pain, then you may have a condition known as “pelvic congestion syndrome.” Pain is the main symptom characterized by PCS, and it’s often pain that gets worse as the day goes on. For this reason, it can be easy to dismiss it as just another part of your pregnancy that you’ll have to manage while carrying your child. However, PCS can be debilitating – and if it persists and continues even after pregnancy, treatment should be sought.

Why Do Women Get PCS?

Pelvic congestion syndrome, also known as PVCS or PCS, is characterized by pelvic pain that’s often linked to an enlargement of the veins in a woman’s lower abdominal area. Because the abdominal veins enlarge throughout a woman’s pregnancy to meet the demands for increased blood flow, this condition is common with women who are carrying a child or who have already given birth to one or more children. However, it’s worth noting that PCS is not well understood. While it’s believed to be common in younger women, pregnant women and women who have already given birth to children, researchers hypothesize that genetics and hormones may also play a role in its development. For this reason, it can be difficult to prevent, which is why corrective treatment is often the best course of action.

Are Pelvic Varicose Veins Dangerous for Babies?

PCS is a condition that mainly impacts the woman, often during and after the pregnancy. That’s the good news for pregnant women, as PCS doesn’t have an effect on the baby. However, for a pregnant woman, the addition of PCS can make an already changing time all the more complicated. And if the chronic pain becomes too debilitating, treatment should be sought. Treatment options often consist of hormonal therapy or a minimally invasive embolization, which essentially works to correct the varicose veins.
