Varicose veins are painful and irritating. And, if you have varicose veins, there is a good chance you don’t want to exercise because you are worried you will make them worse. The already damaged veins could become more inflamed if you aren’t careful with how you exercise. But, cutting exercise out of your life isn’t good either. A lack of activity will make you feel worse and is detrimental to your cardiovascular health. There are so many benefits to exercise, so it’s important you work around your varicose challenges and establish a healthy movement routine. Don’t let your pesky varicose veins get in the way of the daily boost exercise offers.

Winter is Here, But You Can Still Exercise Indoors to Help Varicose Veins

While a brisk walk was a great exercise option in the warmer months, heading outside in the winter probably isn’t top of your list. As chilly weather hits Nevada, head inside to keep working out.

Why Exercise is Good for Varicose Veins

Long periods of sitting or standing are actually one of the things that cause varicose veins. Exercise helps get the body moving and prevents the strain being sedentary puts on your veins. Your body just doesn’t handle long periods of stationary inactivity well. Exercise also improves your circulation. While exercise won’t reduce the varicose veins you have now, it can help prevent more in the future. And, exercise makes you feel good. It will help boost your mood and revitalize your internal systems.

Exercises You Can Do Indoors During these Colder Months

There are so many ways you can get active inside! Aim for at least 30 minutes of light to moderate exercise five times a week. Some of the most popular methods include:
  • YouTube workout video (yoga or Pilates might be a great place to start)
  • Treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical for a solid indoor cardio boost!
  • Leg or core exercises (like air squats, bicycle legs or calf raises)
  • Leg lifts to alleviate pressure and increase blood flow (this works best if you can lay on your back)
  • Light dumbbell weights or resistance bands (heavy weight could strain the veins)
  • Indoor pool (water adds great resistance while being kind to your joints)
The American Heart Association notes, “Get up and move throughout the day. Any activity is better than none. Even light-intensity activity can offset the serious health risks of being sedentary.”
