Las Vegas Vascular Surgeons Discuss Vein Treatment Options

August 11, 2017 • • Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective treatment for varicose veins and spider veins. Our Las Vegas vein doctor at Desert Vein Institute performs sclerotherapy to reduce the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for spider veins, which are those tiny veins that appear on your legs, face, or chest. Spider veins, also known by their medical name telangiectasias, look somewhat like roadmap lines or cobwebs. The unsightly veins do not usually cause pain or serious medical complications, but they can cause considerable embarrassment as they ruin the smooth appearance of your skin. Sclerotherapy can help erase spider veins to restore your skin’s natural appeal.

Our Las Vegas vein surgeon may recommend sclerotherapy for the treatment of small varicose veins, which may develop on your lower legs, usually at the back of your legs. Like spider veins, varicose veins are swollen blood vessels that are visible through the skin. Unlike spider veins, however, varicose veins can cause discomfort. In some cases, varicose veins can cause complications, such as painful sores near your ankles. Sclerotherapy may treat smaller varicose veins by itself or in conjunction with another varicose vein treatment.

Las Vegas Vein Surgeon Describes Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

Our Las Vegas vein surgeon performs sclerotherapy at our outpatient vein clinic, which means you can go home right away without an overnight stay at a hospital. There are no special preparations for sclerotherapy – just wear clothing that allows you to expose the treatment area and leave jewelry at home.

You will relax on a comfortable examination table for the procedure. Our vein doctor will inject a chemical solution, known as a sclerosant, into the affected vein. The sclerosant irritates the interior walls of the affected vein, which react by swelling shut. In time, the treated vein breaks apart; nearby tissue absorbs the remnants of the vein. Your circulatory system reroutes blood through other veins.

Treated veins fade within a few weeks. Sclerotherapy can also help with any symptoms associated with varicose veins, such as discomfort and swelling. Repeat treatments are required in some cases.

Sclerotherapy is minimally invasive and does not require anesthesia. The procedure causes very little discomfort or bruising, if any. Depending on the number of veins treated, the procedure may take as little as 15 minutes.

You can get up and walk around immediately after sclerotherapy – in fact, we encourage walking, as it stimulates blood circulation to the treatment area. You can return to your normal activities right away, although you should avoid strenuous activity immediately after sclerotherapy treatment for varicose veins and spider veins.

We recommend that you wear compression stockings, which are tight hosiery, to maintain pressure on the treated veins for one to three weeks after sclerotherapy. Our vein doctor at Desert Vein Institute wants you to experience the best outcome possible from your Las Vegas sclerotherapy treatment for spider veins and varicose veins.
