Compression Stockings. What do I Need?

January 1, 1970 • • Vein Treatment

If you have symptoms of venous disease, compression stockings are often helpful to alleviate some of the discomfort. Or if you have a job in which you sit or stand for long hours, you might benefit from stockings to help keep your veins in healthy condition. Stockings come in all shapes, sizes and colors. There are knee high, thigh high and pantyhose styles and they come in a variety of strengths of compression. We recommend you use 20-30 mmHg strength for the best benefit. Knee high is generally sufficient to lend support, but thigh and pantyhose styles are beneficial if you have varicose veins particularly on the thighs. Compression stockings can be purchased at most pharmacies and online without a prescription, but your doctor may write a prescription so you may use your health insurance or savings account benefits. Over time, compression stockings do lose their elasticity and should be replaced a few times a year, depending on your usage. The bottom line is to find a style and brand that is comfortable for you, and to wear them regularly.
